Herwig Baier
Prof. Dr. Herwig Baier is the director at the Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology in Martinsried, Germany since 2011. The goal of his research is to understand how genes assemble neuronal circuits and how these circuits in turn control behavior. His team is particularly interested in the visual system and use zebrafish as experimental model. Being a biologist by training, he received a Boehringer-Ingelheim Fonds PhD fellowship from October 1991 until July 1994 and was awarded his PhD in 1995 from the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tübingen, Germany. He then worked as postdoc in the lab of William Harris at the University of California, San Diego, USA (1995-1998). From 1998 to 2012, he was professor of neuroscience in Department of Physiology at the University of California, San Francisco.
